Emma Butcher is an Artist and Illustrator based in Falmouth, Cornwall. She creates artwork for books and editorial illustrations, alongside her personal work and painting practice.
Emma graduated from MA Illustration: Authorial Practice at Falmouth University in 2018, where she discovered her love for visual narrative. Her illustrations have been published by the National Trust, Atlantic Press and independent magazines.
Psychological and atmospheric, much of her work is set during the nocturnal hours and occupies liminal spaces such as shore and coastlines, windows and caves. Emma’s imagery is poetic, ambiguous and mysterious; playing with what is seen and unseen. The viewer is invited into these spaces, saturated with the uncanny, allowing them to feel an emotive shift, a disruption to that initial stillness.
Her studio is currently based at Gray’s Wharf in Penryn, where she is working on commercial projects, her second graphic novel and work for a group show at Penwith gallery, St Ives in March 2023.
